is it even worth it? not really imo.īest of luck on this mod project, while it's interesting to see hacks for the original hardware the reward doesn't seem to be there for the effort on a practical level. The cabinet shells are uniform no matter the flavor you decide to buy with a couple exceptions. and I think there are sub 5 dollar usb options now too.īut again.

It's not very difficult to build a spi flash interface using old school parallel port. should theoretically be possible to dump the spi chip, modify the contents and then reflash. Im not sure what's in your unit but if they used a SPI flash chip like in the gen 1's. then look at a broken laptop or go with a PI enough to get the job done and that's about it.Īny p4+ rescued off the side of the road/trash is going to be faster/better and cost you no money except to adapt the monitor or replace it which you could get a used lcd monitor for a few bucks from most thrift stores. It sounds like a pita really on anything other than the gen 1's and even then is it worth it? in mos situations im going to say no. Connect to that port with a USB-UART adapter, and log in using default: mimebox or newborg: newborg. It sounds like this involves soldering a few connections onto pads labeled CON4? More details about this step would be really helpful. (I haven't found directions for this, but it seems to be held together with screws, so I imagine that's not too hard.) Jumping around and piecing it together, it looks like the steps are roughly:

I managed to find out what version of the software I have (though nothing in the post makes any use of that info that I can see). I found this post, but it's a bit confusing to me, and of course no longer open for comments. But I would prefer to do this by updating the firmware on the existing board, rather than ripping out the guts and replacing it with something based on an RPi. It would then be the perfect portrait-mode bartop for me.

I'd love to replace those two with their better versions (Pac-Man and Dig-Dug), and also add Donkey Kong and Frogger. Pac-Man and Galaga, of course), are awesome, while the other two (Pac-Man Plus and Dig-Dug 2) are pretty much a waste.
